What Soundmancer does
Made for shows recorded one mic per person, from a half-hour interview to a four-hour panel with seven voices.
Edit by reading
The episode is a document
Bring in one file per person. Each track is transcribed on its own, so the track is the speaker and nothing has to guess who said what. Then read the conversation and strike what goes. The audio goes with it.
- Cuts land where the speaker is already quiet, with a short fade.
- Fillers are found and listed, to cut one at a time or all at once.
- Scenes, an outline and a target length show where the time goes as you cut.
- Markers you drop are carried into every export.
- The edit saves itself as you go, and every cut can be undone.
When everyone talks at once
Crosstalk you can read, and cut one voice at a time
Most editors give you one script. When people talk over each other, cutting a word there cuts everyone who was talking at that moment, so the fix waits for a timeline. Soundmancer transcribes every mic on its own, so the transcript shows who talked over whom, right at the word.
Every overlap is sorted for you, with nothing to tag. A quick "yeah" or "mm-hmm" sits in the sentence it was said under, the size of a word. Someone cutting in shows at the word where they started. When people talk over each other for a few seconds, the transcript shows a column for each of them.
Strike a line and only that person goes; everyone else keeps talking. What you hear in the editor is what the export gets.
Tighten the pauses
Remove silence shortens the gaps across every track at once, so nobody drifts out of sync. Pauses get shorter, never removed, and the room stays.
Set up the mix
Set each person's level, line up tracks that started at different times, and switch on Polish, per-track sound cleanup, while it plays.
Unlimited transcription
It all happens on your computer, on your graphics card if it can and the processor if it can't. No hours or credits to buy, and no upload.
Export
Your DAW gets the edit
Every export is cut from one plan, so they all agree with each other and with what the editor played.
- A session for Audition, Reaper or Audacity, for your polish pass.
- Stems, one file per person.
- A finished mix, ready for mastering.
- A review copy for a host or client to sign off on: the edit as a document with every cut struck through, and the mix with a tick at each cut.
Master
Sets the loudness of a finished mix with a true-peak limiter, checks it, and writes a tagged MP3 with chapters and cover art, plus an archive WAV.
Trim
For files outside an episode: removes the stretches where everybody is silent from every track at once. Reads raw files, an Audition session or a Reaper project, and can write the session back.
Your audio never leaves your computer
Transcribing, editing and mastering all run on your own machine. The privacy page lists the little the app does send.
